It is good for the environment, it saves money, and it creates jobs for people in the city. Some information to motivate...

+ recycled copy paper
To make 1 ton of regular copy paper, 680 gallons of oil and 10,601 kwh of electricity are used).

Every ton of recycled paper bought, saves 3 (or 3.3) cubic yards of landill space.

Every ton of recycled paper saves: 4100 kwh electricity, 7000 gallons of water, 60 pounds of air pollutants.

Every ton of recycled paper bought saves 17 trees and 380 gallons of oil. One tree can filter up to 60 pounds of pollutants a year.

+ toner cartridges
Toner cartridges contain b/w 2-3 pounds of plastic and metal.
more info

It takes about one pint of oil to make a new toner cartridge.

+ glass recycling
Recycling one glass bottle saves enough energy to light a 100 kw bulb for 4 hours.
more info

20% less air pollution, 50% less water pollution, 50% energy savings. 1 ton of glass made from 50% recycled materials saves 250 lbs. of mining wastes.
more info

Recycling one ton of glass saves 1.2 tons of new raw materials. It saves the equivalent of 860 kilowatt hours of electricity or 18% of the energy needed to form new glass.
more info

Every ton of glass recycled saves 1,330 pounds of sand, 433 pounds of soda, 433 pounds of limestone and 151 pounds of feldspar.

A ton of glass made from raw materials creates 384 pounds of mining waste. Using only half recycled glass cuts down the waste by 75%.

A ton of glass made from raw materials also produces almost 28 pounds of air pollution. By using recycled glass that air pollution drops by about 20%.

+ aluminum can recycling
Tossing away an aluminum can wastes as much energy as pouring out half of that can's volume of gasoline.

Making new aluminum cans from used cans takes 95 percent less energy and 20 recycled cans can be made with the energy needed to produce one can using virgin ore.
more info

Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to keep a 100-watt bulb burning for almost four hours or run your television for three hours.
more info

Recycling cans reduces pollution by 95%, 4lbs. of bauxite saved for every pound of al. recycled.
more info

One ton saves 64300 kwh.
more info

25 cans equals one ton of aluminum, 8766 lbs needed to produce one ton (so 219,150 cans = 1 ton).

+ steel recycling
Every lb. of steel recycled saves enough energy to light a 60 watt bulb for 24 hours, one ton of recycled steel saves 2500 lbs. of ore, 1000 lbs coal, and 40 lbs. limestone.
more info + energy efficiency
Multiply kwh saved by 1.64 to find amount of greenhouse gases not released.
