2007 AsiaGSD Agenda

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

+ Conference: Space Rocks!

November 9th: 6pm Kick off lecture by MK12. Reception to follow.

November 10th: 10am-5pm. Reception to follow.

Both days will be held in Piper Auditorium. Harvard GSD. Cambridge, MA.

Bringing together artists and designers from a broad range of disciplines and countries, Space Rocks! attempts to understand spatial practices outside of architecture, from Asia as well as other parts of the world. This discussion is an attempt to reinvigorate students of the design school with new ways of conceptualizing spatial experience and representation from differing cultural perspectives as a way of making architecture more accessible on a global scale.

Space Rocks! asks whether architecture may benefit from a better understanding of related disciplines and how their work varies (if at all) across cultural borders. Fields outside of our own are increasingly adopting architectural methods to develop their projects, thus we are seeking to re-examine our own field through their eyes. We're investigating the specific relationship between spatial conception and representation of work, as a way of unpacking these projects and addressing them to a discussion within architecture. In doing so, we hope to fortify the discipline in a professional climate where "architectural" is increasingly claimed as a laudatory adjective by outside industries. By inviting guests from all over Asia and the United States, and from varying industries including artists in film, fashion, sculpture, graphic design, and photography to present their work in a forum at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, we hope to generate a dialogue between students and professionals concerning the effects of working across different cultural fields and spatial industries.

+ Design/Build workshop: $2k + 48h + You

AsiaGSD will present a site-specific installation at Gund Hall by an emerging Asian artist or designer in collaboration with GSD students through a two day intensive building workshop. The objective of this workshop is to provide a framework for spatial discourse through direct interaction between architecture and the arts. An artist/designer will be invited to lead the weekend workshop with students for a large scale installation using a budget of $2000. The workshop will kick off with a half-day long charette before transitioning into fabrication and will culminate with a night-time opening.

+ Lecture Series: Confluence

Each year our lecture series consistently brings top designers of Asian heritage to discuss their projects in the Asian Pacific region and around the world. AsiaGSD enjoys the opportunity to bring well-established speakers who are leading their field as well as introducing fresh, young voices to the discourse at this school. In 2007 we predict another great year with speakers from China, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, New York, Los Angeles, and more.

More speakers to be confirmed
