April 17th-18th, 2004. Harvard GSD.
View the introduction and agenda
This year's conference takes a regional approach to understand the different nuances at play between Asian cities and to assess how they respond to density issues.
Through a call for paper and invitational process, we have invited practitioners and theorists among private, public and academic backgrounds to stimulate examinations of this topic. The forum is a two-day symposium of case study presentations and panel discussions to introduce the various strategies Asian cities adopt to face for the challenges of growth. The intent is to provide a multidisciplinary survey of contemporary trends in the Asian region through three specific categories:
Preservation Strategies of preserving the historic fabric while accommodating contemporary condition.
Ecology Strategies of restoring and connecting ecological system while allowing the demand for growth.
Built Form Strategies of Innovative sustainable hyper-dense neighborhood design.
Each category will feature three separate case studies from different countries. The structure of the conference will be organized thematically to reflect the categories outlined above. This will entail the presentation of three case studies that will be followed by a panel discussion on that particular topic.
This conference serves as a catalyst to provide a dialogue and intellectual exchange between Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urban Design and Planning disciplines, across country borders, as well as public, private and academic, sectors. We are honored by our company. We sincerely hope that you will enjoy this symposium and walk away with a new understanding of emerging cities in Asia on a path less traveled.
