+ Conference: Modernism in Asia
Modernism in Asia: Visions of Tomorrow
March 9-11, 2000. Harvard GSD.
View the introduction and agenda
The conference seeks to present a systematic examination of modernist architecture's history and current state in Asia. While the topics may range from the particular challenges of designing a museum to business climate in Japan, such discussions present an important step toward a systematic understanding of the ubiquitous phenomenon of modernism that many of us have taken for granted.
The conference will proceed in three formats: case study presentations, historical trajectories, and panel discussions. We expect a total of twelve to fourteen presentations on cases and historical trajectories, framed by three thematic panels, over the course of the conference. We anticipate a broad representation of types, periods, and geographic regions.
Chaired by Professor Peter G. Rowe, Dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Design, the Board of Faculty of Advisors also consists of Professors K. Michael Hays, Richard Marshall, Toshiko Mori, and Cherie Wendelken. Professor Peter G. Rowe will deliver a keynote lecture at the conference, drawing from his recent studies on contemporary Chinese architecture and urbanism. Professors Hays, Marshall, and Mori will each be moderating a panel at the conference.
